Nikon Coolpix P100 Review

The Coolpix P100 is a next-generation ultra-zoom digital camera with the same SLR-like styling as its predecessor P90. However, it adds some features and special shooting modes to attract a wider range of potential purchasers. Although sensor resolution has been reduced, the zoom range is longer and the adjustable LCD monitor has higher resolution. Its major attraction is its 26x optical zoom, a 26mm ultra wide-angle for large group and wide landscape shots and a 678mm tele to bring far scenes up real close.

The Nikon Coolpix P100 also features full manual and semimanual options with shutter speeds from 8 seconds to 1/2,000 second, and an aperture range of 10 steps of 1/3 exposure value. There are of course a bunch of scene modes, auto scene recognition, subject tracking autofocus for moving subjects, and a single spot on the Mode dial for a group of user-selected settings.

The Nikon P100 features several class-leading movie recording modes. The most significant one is the capture of full 1080p HDTV video. This is the maximum resolution allowed by the HDTV standard and captures wide-screen 16:9 aspect ratio movies at 30 FPS. A top-mounted pair of microphones records stereo sound. A dedicated video recording button is used to record.

The Nikon Coolpix P100 is a major step forward in terms of banishing the bane of the compact camera – image noise. The Coolpix P100 uses a backside-illuminated 10.3-megapixel CMOS sensor. This sensor improves shooting speed and helps reduce noise in low-light photos.

The Coolpix P100 is a simple-to-use and great-to-handle compact capable of great results even at higher sensitivity settings. Its body is well built and features a deep-but-narrow hand-grip to hold it steady. The entire camera feels solid and even the hinge for the LCD screen is substantial.

Overall the Nikon Coolpix P100 is an easy-to-use digital camera with an abundance of features for those who thirst for more control. The availability of full exposure flexibility should prove attractive to learning amateur photographers allowing them to graduate from point-and-shoot photography.
