There are many myths regarding search engine optimization or SEO. One reason for the number of myths is search engines are constantly evolving, requiring new approaches on how to best utilize them. The myths grow due to a lack of rules for how to best rank your site. It is your job to keep updated on any changes a search engine makes to its algorithm. Using a header tag on your site does not affect your search ranking. Keeping the myth alive, people still use keywords in their H tag, even though doing so does not increase your ranking.

But if you really want to see the answer for yourself, you can run tests. If header tags with your page design or the content management system, their use is acceptable but should be restricted. Unless it is a major component to your site design, it is acceptable to not use one. Many people also fall for another SEO fantasy, which is that they need to have a Google Sitemap. Google has an array of tools in its arsenal that you can use and the Sitemap is one of many. If you design your site correctly and make it friendly to search engines, you will not need a Google Sitemap at all. While it won’t harm your site, the benefits are limited to possibly getting your site indexed a little faster by the search engines. It will not influence your SERP ranking or have any effect on other SEO components.

Another concept that is simply a myth is that if you buy incoming links from relevant websites your site will be banned. The fact is, Google would definitely not want you to buy links to influence your rankings and they wouldn’t count them as incoming links if they knew they were paid, but they often don’t know this. They would just discount these links if they were to find out that you paid for them. It wouldn’t make sense for them to completely ban a site for advertising a link on another site. But you should remember that when you’re buying links, the same link building rules apply. It doesn’t matter if you are purchasing links or not, they still need to come from sites that are relevant to your niche. If you want to avoid such potentially costly myths, make it a point to stay as informed as possible.
